Art

I met up with some good friends of mine while in Tulsa,OK; Jerry and Gloria Burns. They drove up from Dallas to visit and watch our mens basketball team compete in the National Tournament. Jerry is a Rochester College alum (class of 1959-60) and his father (C.C. Burns) was my dads minister while growing up in Flint, MI. They are great people and mean so much to my family and Rochester College. They took me to the Gilcrease art museum in Tulsa and we spent the afternoon taking in some great art. The two pictures above are the two pieces of art that impacted me the most. The water fall picture is "Shoshone Falls" just outside of Twin Falls, ID. I visited these falls in person in 1998 and stood there speechless. The original painting is displayed in the Gilcrease and as soon as I saw it I knew what it was. It was painted by Moran, a very famous painter who made Yellowstone famous with his artwork.

The other painting is by Russell. Russell is known for his western art and more specifically the Native American culture. This particular painting really impacted me. It's a lady who has buried her husband with her child standing next to her. She is "cutting herself" which is tradition when native american women are in mourning. She has also killed her husbands horse as it represents the great spirit watching over him.

Thank you Jerry and Gloria...really enjoyed spending the afternoon with you.

Our thanks to you Klint, and to your good friend, Travis, for helping to make a wonderful memory. We will long remember our visit with you and Travis to the Gilcrease, one of our favorite American museums.
